For the Love of the Game

I spent three hours today trying to start a project and got nowhere. Enough is enough.

Creativity hasn't been feeling as juicy as it normally does, and I've been wondering how to spark it again.

When I think back to first learning design — dragging the pen tool around Illustrator, every pixel better than the last — the rush was like nothing else. Then it becomes your job. You spend the rest of your career hunting for something inspiring, or taking on a random project, trying to catch even a fraction of that feeling. The kind that lets you dive in headfirst and only come up for air.

So I've decided I need something on the side with no connection to work whatsoever. No monetisation, no KPIs. Purely for the love of the game.

In a past life I DJ'd and played a fair few sets — even a small crowd gave me a thrill like nothing else. I've always loved electronic music, hip-hop beats and house, but I never dedicated the time to learning an instrument. Which is strange, because music runs in my family. Almost everyone on my mother's side played something. My great-grandparents owned Sawmills Recording Studio, where Oasis, the Rolling Stones, Muse and Supergrass all recorded.

So: music production.

Logic Pro and Ableton are downloaded; I've started learning, and I'm hooked enough that a MIDI keyboard is already on its way.

I'm writing this mostly to stay accountable. But if anyone does read it, I hope it nudges you to pick up something of your own.
